What does By the Fireplace smell like?
By the Fireplace by Maison Margiela came out in 2015 as a unisex Eau de Toilette. The start is spice: cloves and pink pepper, with orange blossom taking the edge off. Chestnut arrives next, held up by guaiac wood and a dry flick of juniper. The finish rests on vanilla, Peru balsam and cashmeran. Its accords read warm spicy, sweet, smoky, woody and vanilla, and that order is a fair summary of the wear: spice up front, a sweet nutty middle, then smoke and wood that settle into a soft, balsamic warmth.
There is only one version to aim at. The house makes no Eau de Parfum or Extrait of it, so every clone below is measured against this Eau de Toilette. Unsure what the strength label means for a scent like this? Read how an Eau de Toilette differs from an Eau de Parfum.

Best overall: Emir Camp Fire
Camp Fire, sold under the Emir line of Paris Corner, has a published pyramid that runs note for note with the original. Its Fragrantica listing gives cloves, pink pepper and orange blossom on top, guaiac wood, chestnut and juniper in the heart, and vanilla, Peru balsam and cashmeran underneath.
The main difference is one the sources leave open. No member write-up in our sources spells out where the two part, and a matching list says nothing about the quality or balance of the materials behind it. What the record does show is agreement: on Parfumo's comparison page for the pair, most of the members who voted find Camp Fire similar to By the Fireplace.
It suits someone who wants the full chestnut-and-clove structure in a large bottle and is happy to judge the finer differences on their own skin. Basis: a named source, Parfumo's comparison page, with the notes from Fragrantica.

Closest on the dry-down: Melting Embers
Melting Embers by Oakcha is described on its Fragrantica page as inspired by By the Fireplace, and the listing repeats the original's nine notes: cloves, pink pepper, orange blossom, chestnut, guaiac wood, juniper, vanilla, cashmeran and Peru balsam.
The main difference, by one owner's account, is light. One member there who owns the original calls Melting Embers spot on but finds it less bright. A second, who wore one on each arm, found the two very close. Another member there finds it sweeter and less smoky, so read this as a hint rather than a settled verdict.
It suits someone who cares most about how near the match is and can accept a slightly duller version of the glow. Oakcha shows its prices in US dollars even for Germany, so the table carries no EU list price for it. Basis: a named source, the Fragrantica listing and the two members' comments under it.

Basis: Named source
- Fragrantica describes Melting Embers as inspired by By the Fireplace and lists the same cloves, pink pepper and orange blossom; chestnut, guaiac wood and juniper; vanilla, cashmeran and Peru balsam. A member who wore the two together on each arm found them very close; another who owns the original calls it spot on, but finds it less bright. Melting Embers by Oakcha (Fragrantica)
Softer take: Woody Chestnut
Woody Chestnut by Dossier names By the Fireplace as its inspiration on the Dossier product page, which lists pink pepper, orange blossom and cloves, then chestnut, gaiac and cade wood, then vanilla, Peru balm and cedarwood. Most of the original's frame is there; juniper and cashmeran are swapped for cade wood and cedarwood.
The main difference is the smoke. A Parfumo member finds a dry-down similar to the original's, with less smoke. A member writing on Fragrantica finds it drier, with less of the original's sweet smoke.
It suits someone who likes the chestnut and wood but finds the smoky sweetness of the original a little heavy for daily wear. Basis: a named source, the house's own inspiration note plus Parfumo and Fragrantica.

- A Parfumo member finds a dry-down similar to By the Fireplace's but with less smoke, and finds it longer-lasting. Woody Chestnut, member statement (Parfumo)
- Dossier names By the Fireplace as its inspiration and lists pink pepper, orange blossom and cloves; chestnut, gaiac and cade wood; vanilla, Peru balm and cedarwood. Woody Chestnut (Dossier)
- A Fragrantica member finds it drier than the original, with less of its sweet smoke. Woody Chestnut by Dossier (Fragrantica)
Sweeter take: Ameer Al Oudh Intense Oud
Ameer Al Oudh Intense Oud by Lattafa is an odd one on paper. It is an oud scent, not a chestnut one: Parfumo lists nutmeg and saffron, woody notes, geranium and labdanum, then vanilla, oud and leather. Vanilla and wood are the only overlap with the original's list.
Yet it has drawn the most votes of any clone here. The Parfumo comparison page for the pair has drawn far more votes than any other in this guide, and most of them find the two similar. The main difference is sugar and smoke. A Parfumo member reviewing By the Fireplace finds the pair very close in DNA but the Lattafa much less smoky, and a long-time wearer of the original on the Fragrantica forum finds it much sweeter and less complex.
It suits someone who wants the warm, sweet side of the original and does not need the chestnut or the campfire edge. If oud itself is new to you, start with what oud is. Basis: a named source, Parfumo's comparison page and two member write-ups.

Lowest price: Olfactory Bonfire
Olfactory Bonfire by Fragrance World has the lowest bottle price in the table. On the comparison page for the two, most of the members who voted find them similar.
The main difference is the chestnut, which is not there. Parfumo lists clove and saffron, cashmeran, Akigalawood and caramel, then vanilla and amber. Clove, cashmeran and vanilla match the original; saffron, caramel and amber are new, and the chestnut-guaiac-juniper heart is gone from the list.
It suits someone who loves the spiced, smoky-sweet mood more than the nut itself and wants a big bottle for the least money. Basis: a named source, Parfumo's comparison page.

Darker take: Capricorn
Capricorn by French Avenue is the weakest link here, and worth knowing as such. Nobody in our sources markets it as an alternative; it is here because most of the members who voted on Parfumo's comparison page for it find it similar to By the Fireplace, though that page has a small pool of votes.
The main difference is resin in place of spice and nut. Parfumo lists smoke and frankincense, then fir balsam and labdanum, then guaiac wood, vanilla, amber and benzoin. Guaiac wood and vanilla are shared; there is no clove, chestnut or orange blossom on its list.
It suits someone who wants the smoky half of the original pushed further toward incense and resin, and who is happy with a looser match. Basis: a named source, Parfumo's comparison page, and nothing more.

Premium alternative: Campfire Nights
Campfire Nights by Alexandria Fragrances is an extrait, a stronger concentration than the original's Eau de Toilette. Its Fragrantica listing gives chestnut, vanilla, tolu balsam, clove, agarwood and orange blossom, which keeps four of the original's notes and trades Peru balsam for tolu.
The main difference is oud. A Parfumo member who loves By the Fireplace finds it close in formulation and longer-lasting, but finds its oud flatter in the dry-down. Agarwood is not on the original's list at all.
It suits someone who wants a denser, extrait-strength take and does not mind an oud note under the chestnut. Alexandria quotes Campfire Nights in US dollars alone, which is why its price cell is empty. Basis: a named source, a single member write-up on Parfumo plus the notes from Fragrantica.

What the clones tend to lose
Read the sources together and one pattern stands out: the smoke is the first thing to thin. Woody Chestnut has less of it, Ameer Al Oudh Intense Oud has much less, Melting Embers is described as less bright, and Campfire Nights has a flatter oud in the dry-down.
The chestnut is the second casualty. Camp Fire, Melting Embers, Woody Chestnut and Campfire Nights keep it; Olfactory Bonfire, Capricorn and the Lattafa leave it off their lists. If the nutty heart is the reason you love the original, those four are where to look.
A 3ml of the original or a clone bottle?
This is a rare guide where the original is easy to reach. A 3ml of By the Fireplace, around 60 sprays, is €8.01, less than any clone bottle in the table. That is the lowest outlay for finding out whether you want this scent at all.
For everyday spraying the sums flip. A 10ml decant, around 200 sprays, is €25.11 (€2.51/ml), and a 30ml, around 600, is €62.10 (€2.07/ml). Every priced clone works out lower per ml than even that 30ml. Our price per ml index and the decant or full bottle guide lay out how the sizes compare.
Authentic perfumes with the same warmth
If you like the spiced, vanilla-warm side of By the Fireplace and want another original, three on 10ML share part of it. Noir Extreme by Tom Ford, also from 2015, opens on cardamom, nutmeg and saffron, keeps orange blossom in a heart of kulfi, rose and jasmine, and dries to vanilla, amber and sandalwood: creamier and more floral. Angels' Share by Kilian pours cognac over cinnamon, tonka bean and oak, then vanilla, praline and candied almond, a boozier sweetness. Ebene Fume by Tom Ford, from 2021, is the smoky one, with pink pepper and black pepper over incense, vanilla, cistus and leather. Each comes as a decant, so you can wear them across one week. Our Kilian guide covers the rest of that house.
How to test a dupe
Judge a chestnut clone on skin, never on a strip. The clove and pink pepper of By the Fireplace are loud at first and fade, and the real comparison is the guaiac smoke and vanilla once it has settled. Wear the original on a Monday and the clone on a Tuesday, and note in the evening which one still reads as warm wood and which has gone flat or sugary.
A 3ml is enough for that week of back-and-forth, and a 10ml decant covers weeks if the original wins. New to the format? Read what a perfume decant is and how to skip the blind buy. For more cold-weather scents to try next, see our winter perfumes for women and winter fragrances for men.
Clone or original? What to know first
- Can I try By the Fireplace in a 3ml before I settle on a clone?
- Yes. 10ML sells By the Fireplace in 3ml, 10ml and 30ml decants filled from the original bottle. The 3ml, around 60 sprays, is €8.01, which costs less than any clone bottle in this guide's table.
- Which By the Fireplace dupe comes out on top here, and on what evidence?
- Emir Camp Fire by Paris Corner. Its published notes run through all nine of the original's, from cloves and chestnut to Peru balsam, and most members who voted on Parfumo's comparison page for the pair find the two similar.
- Is a By the Fireplace sample the same thing as a 10ML decant?
- A 10ML decant is not a free sample: it is a 3ml, 10ml or 30ml bottle you buy, filled from the original By the Fireplace. A 10ml decant, around 200 sprays, is €25.11.
- How near does Melting Embers get to the Maison Margiela original?
- Near, by two Fragrantica members' accounts. One who owns the original calls it spot on but less bright, and another who wore one on each arm found them very close. It lists the same nine notes.
- Is there a clone with less smoke than By the Fireplace?
- Woody Chestnut by Dossier. A Parfumo member finds a similar dry-down with less smoke, and a member on Fragrantica finds it drier, with less of the original's sweet smoke.
- Which clones keep the chestnut note?
- Emir Camp Fire, Melting Embers, Woody Chestnut and Campfire Nights list chestnut. Olfactory Bonfire, Capricorn and Ameer Al Oudh Intense Oud do not, so they lean on spice, resin or oud instead.
- Do the clones work out cheaper per ml than a 30ml of By the Fireplace?
- Yes, every clone with a price in the table is lower per ml. The 30ml of the original is €62.10, or €2.07/ml, while a 3ml lets you check you want the scent before you buy a bottle of anything.
- How long will By the Fireplace stay on my skin?
- That depends on your skin and the weather, so nobody can promise it for you. Wear a 3ml for a week and you will know how it behaves on you.
