What does Lost Cherry smell like?

Bottle of Lost Cherry by Tom Ford
The originalLost CherryTom Ford

Lost Cherry is a 2018 Tom Ford Private Blend built as a dark, boozy cherry. It opens on black cherry and cherry liqueur with a bitter almond edge, so the first minutes read like a glass of kirsch with marzipan beside it. The heart turns to sour cherry and plum, softened by Turkish rose and jasmine sambac. The long base is where most of the character sits: vanilla, tonka bean, Peru balsam and benzoin for warmth, cinnamon and cloves for spice, then sandalwood, cedar, patchouli and vetiver to keep it from turning into dessert.

That split between a sweet, syrupy opening and a dry, woody, spiced base matters when you judge a dupe. Almost every clone gets the cherry and almond right in the first half hour. Where they part ways is the base, so the picks below are ranked on how much of it they keep.

Best overall: Ambery Cherry

Bottle of Ambery Cherry by Dossier
Ambery CherryDossierBest overall

Ambery Cherry by Dossier lists cherry, almond and cinnamon up top, plum, cloves, rose and jasmine in the heart, and tonka, vanilla and Peru balsam in the base. Every one of those notes also appears in Lost Cherry's published pyramid, and none of them points somewhere else, which is why it earns the overall spot.

The main difference: the listing has no woods. Lost Cherry closes on sandalwood, cedar, patchouli and vetiver; Ambery Cherry closes on balsam, tonka and vanilla, so the dry-down reads rounder and sweeter, with less of the original's dry grip. One Parfumo member also notes that the strong cherry fades well before the end of the day, leaving clove and rose.

Who it suits: someone who loves the first hour of Lost Cherry and wants a warm cherry-almond scent for cold weather and evenings, without needing the full woody finish.

Basis: named external source. Its Fragrantica listing shows the note pyramid and places Lost Cherry first among the perfumes its visitors also like; a Parfumo member's notes describe the dry-down.

Closest on the dry-down: Popped Cherry

Bottle of Popped Cherry by The Dua Brand
Popped CherryThe Dua BrandClosest on the dry-down

Popped Cherry by The Dua Brand has the fullest overlap of any pick. Parfumo lists black cherry, griotte syrup, bitter almond, cherry liqueur, jasmine sambac, Turkish rose, roasted tonka, Peru balsam, sandalwood, cedarwood and vetiver. That covers the original's opening and most of its woody base, which is what the others leave out.

The main difference: a Parfumo member finds it more cherry-intense and sharper, and the original creamier and more resinous. Going by the lists, it also leaves out the plum, vanilla, benzoin, cinnamon and cloves of Lost Cherry's pyramid.

Who it suits: the wearer who wants a sharper, more cherry-led take than the creamy original. It sits well on autumn and winter evenings.

Basis: named external source. Parfumo's community list of similar perfumes puts Lost Cherry first, and one member's write-up there sets out the difference; on Fragrantica, an owner of Lost Cherry who wore the two on different wrists finds them hard to tell apart after the first minutes. The house sells in US dollars, so the table shows no EU list price.

Why this pick?Sources: 3

Basis: Named source

  1. An owner of Lost Cherry, wearing the two on different wrists, finds Popped Cherry an incredibly close dupe, hard to tell apart after five minutes and at the one-hour mark, and still going six hours later when the original had faded; another member finds it a touch sweeter and longer-lasting. Popped Cherry by The Dua Brand (Fragrantica)
  2. The community's 'smells similar' list puts Lost Cherry first; the listed notes run black cherry, griotte syrup, bitter almond and cherry liqueur over tonka, Peru balsam, sandalwood, cedarwood and vetiver with jasmine sambac and Turkish rose. Popped Cherry by The Dua Brand (Parfumo)
  3. A member finds it more cherry-intense and sharper, and the original creamier and more resinous. Popped Cherry, member notes (Parfumo)

Lowest price: Lovely Chérie

Bottle of Lovely Chérie by Maison Alhambra
Lovely ChérieMaison AlhambraLowest price

Lovely Chérie by Maison Alhambra, sold in some countries as Forbidden Love, shares bitter almond, rose, black cherry, tonka and Peru balsam with Lost Cherry. One Parfumo member describes boozy cherry liqueur, marzipan and sour cherry syrup over tonka and woods, which is the Lost Cherry story told plainly.

The main difference: it adds amber and toffee and lists no jasmine, so it leans sweeter and more confectionery. Owners who have both are split: some find it stronger than the original, others thinner and more linear, the same cherry-almond from start to finish without the spiced turn.

Who it suits: a first try at the style, or a bottle to wear freely on weekends while you decide whether the original is worth it. Treat it as a sweet cherry gourmand rather than a woody one.

Basis: named external source. A Parfumo member's write-up compares it directly with Lost Cherry; the Fragrantica listing and Basenotes member comments record the split views.

Sweeter take: Not Another Cherry

Bottle of Not Another Cherry by Fine'ry
Not Another CherryFine'rySweeter take

Not Another Cherry by Fine'ry keeps the pairing most people remember from Lost Cherry: cherry and almond, with Turkish rose behind them. It adds amaretto, which pushes the almond from bitter towards sweet liqueur.

The main difference: the listing stops there. There is no balsam, no spice and no wood, so it never reaches Lost Cherry's darker base. It is a sweeter, simpler cherry-almond scent, and one Lost Cherry owner on the listing disputes the comparison altogether.

Who it suits: someone who finds the original too heavy or too woody and wants the sweet cherry part only, for daytime in the colder months.

Basis: named external source. Its Fragrantica listing shows the notes and places Lost Cherry first among the perfumes its visitors also like. It is sold in the US, and we found no EU list price.

Softer take: Sinful

Bottle of Sinful by Oakcha
SinfulOakchaSofter take

Sinful by Oakcha lists cherry, cherry liqueur and bitter almond, then cherry syrup, jasmine sambac and Turkish rose, then sandalwood, vetiver and cedarwood. The Fragrantica description says it is inspired by Lost Cherry, and the opening and heart follow the published notes closely.

The main difference: the warm half of the base is missing. Without tonka, vanilla, Peru balsam or the spices, the finish is woody and quiet rather than resinous and sweet. Some Fragrantica members find it lighter and less complex than the original; that suits some wearers better.

Who it suits: anyone who likes the idea of Lost Cherry but finds it too sweet or too dense for the office. It is the easiest pick here to wear in the daytime.

Basis: named external source. The Fragrantica listing carries the notes, the stated inspiration and the mixed member comments.

Darker take: Fructus Virginis

Bottle of Fructus Virginis by Alexandria Fragrances
Fructus VirginisAlexandria FragrancesDarker take

Fructus Virginis by Alexandria Fragrances lists cherry, bitter almond and liquor with Turkish rose and jasmine sambac, then tonka, Peru balsam, sandalwood, cedar and vetiver. On paper it follows Lost Cherry's structure from top to base.

The main difference: Fragrantica members who have compared the two are split. Some find it very close; others find it more leathery and balsamic and miss the original's clove. A Parfumo member calls it more intense in its development. Expect a denser, darker cherry than Lost Cherry, with less of the spice. Parfumo also marks the extract edition as possibly discontinued, although the house still sells Fructus Virginis.

Who it suits: night wear in winter, for someone who wants the cherry heavier and the base more resinous.

Basis: named external source. Its Fragrantica listing and a Parfumo member's write-up give the notes and the comparison. The house sells in US dollars, so the table shows no EU list price.

Premium alternative: Lovefest Burning Cherry

Bottle of Lovefest Burning Cherry by Kayali
Lovefest Burning CherryKayaliPremium alternative

Lovefest Burning Cherry by Kayali is not a budget clone but a perfume in its own right, and the most expensive bottle in the table. It shares a good part of Lost Cherry's list: cherry, rose, jasmine sambac, tonka, Peru balsam and vetiver.

The main difference: it adds raspberry, praline and palo santo. A Parfumo member finds the cherry similarly juicy but the whole perfume drier, smokier and less balsamic, and another member there finds it closer to Tom Ford's own Cherry Smoke than to Lost Cherry. The smoke is the point: it moves Lost Cherry's sweetness towards a campfire.

Who it suits: someone who wants a cherry perfume with its own identity rather than a stand-in, for autumn evenings.

Basis: named external source. Parfumo's community list of similar perfumes puts Lost Cherry first, and the member write-ups there explain why it is not a close match. Its Fragrantica listing gives the notes.

What a 10ml decant of Lost Cherry buys you

The reason most people search for a Lost Cherry dupe is the price of a full bottle. A decant changes that sum. At 10ML, a 3ml decant of Lost Cherry costs €21.96 (around 60 sprays), a 10ml decant €73.71 (around 200 sprays) and a 30ml decant €220.41 (around 600 sprays), each filled from the original bottle. That is €7.37/ml at the 10ml size.

A clone bottle still costs less per ml; the dated prices are in the table above. But the gap is far smaller than the full-bottle price suggests, and a 10ml decant gives you the thing the clones only approach: the full spiced, woody base. If you wear a cherry scent a few times a month, 200 sprays of the real thing may last you longer than your interest in it. If you want to wear cherry every day, a clone bottle is the more sensible buy, and a 3ml of the original is still the best way to find out which clone you actually prefer.

What every clone gets wrong

Reading the note lists together shows a pattern. The clones compete on the opening, and nearly all of them get the cherry, liqueur and bitter almond right. The part they trim is the base, which in Lost Cherry is long and layered.

Where each pick parts from Lost Cherry, going by the listed notes and the cited member comments
PickKeepsLeaves out or changes
Ambery CherryCherry, almond, spice, rose, balsamNo woods in the base
Popped CherryCherry, almond, rose, balsam, woodsSharper; no plum, vanilla or spice
Lovely ChérieCherry, almond, rose, balsamAdds toffee and amber; sweeter
Not Another CherryCherry, almond, roseNo balsam, spice or wood
SinfulCherry, almond, rose, jasmine, woodsNo tonka, vanilla or balsam
Fructus VirginisCherry, almond, rose, balsam, woodsMore leathery; less clove
Lovefest Burning CherryCherry, rose, jasmine, balsamAdds smoke, raspberry and praline

The cinnamon and cloves are the most common casualty. They are what makes Lost Cherry read as a spiced winter perfume rather than a cherry sweet, and only Ambery Cherry lists both. The second is the balance between sugar and wood: clones that keep the vanilla tend to lose the woods, and clones that keep the woods tend to lose the vanilla. The original holds both, which is why its dry-down feels dry and sweet at once.

How to test a dupe

Paper strips flatter a clone. A blotter shows the opening, and the opening is the part every clone gets right; the base only appears on skin, well into the day.

  1. Start with the original. A 3ml decant of Lost Cherry gives you enough for several full days of wear, so you learn its base before you judge anything against it.
  2. Wear the clone on a different day, one spray on the same spot, and check it in the morning, after lunch and in the evening. Skin, weather and heat all change how a perfume develops.
  3. Compare the dry-down, not the first minutes. Ask whether the spice and wood are there by the afternoon.

If none of the clones convince you, there are other authentic cherry perfumes to try in the same sizes. Latte di Cherry by New Notes and Very Good Girl Elixir by Carolina Herrera both open on cherry and almond, the second with black cherry and bitter almond like Lost Cherry. Bodacious by Boadicea The Victorious puts cherry beside cognac, almond and clove. Rouge Smoking by BDK Parfums pairs cherry with cinnamon and almond. For more warm, sweet perfumes, see the best gourmand perfumes, the tonka bean note and our guide to what a perfume decant is.

Will a Lost Cherry clone outlast the original?
